Description

Bishops-Sutton, a parish and a hundred in Hants. The parish lies on the river Arle, 1 1/2 mile SE of Alresford station on the L. & S.W.R., and 8 1/2 miles SW of Alton, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Alresford. Acreage, 3746; population, 445. The manor was early acquired by the Bishops of Winchester, and had a palace of theirs, which is now traceable in nothing but the alleged site of their kennel. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester; gross value, £150. The church is partly Norman, partly Early Decorated, and contains a good brass of the 15th century.
