Description
Shipton, a parish in Gloucestershire, with a station (Dowdeswell) on the Midland and South-Western Junction railway, 2 miles S of Andoversford station on the G.W.R., 6 WNW of Northleach, and 7 SE of Cheltenham. Post town, Andoversford (R.S.O.) The parish was formed by the union in 1872 of the parishes of Shipton Oliffe and Shipton Sollars, and comprises 2816 acres; population of the civil parish, 354; of the ecclesiastical, 340. Limestone is abundant. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol; net value, £313 with residence. The church is Norman. The ancient church of Shipton Sollars was restored in 1884 after having been closed for years.
