Description
Longney, a village and a parish in Gloucestershire. The village stands on the river Severn, 1 mile W of the Gloucester and Berkeley Ship Canal, 3 WNW of Haresfield station on the M.R., and 6 1/2 SW by S of Gloucester. It has a post office under Gloucester; money order office, Saul; telegraph office, Hardwick. The parish comprises 1559 acres; population of the civil parish, 344; of the ecclesiastical, 317. The manor and much of the land belong to the trustees of Smith's Charity. The orchards are famous for the Longney Russet Apple. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol; gross value, £140 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is Early English, with a Perpendicular tower, and was restored in 1873. There is a Congregational chapel.
