Wivenhoe, a small town and a parish in Essex. The town stands on the river Colne and on the Tendring Hundred branch of the G.E.R., 5 miles SE of Colchester. It forms with Brightlingsea and Eowhedge a member of the Cinque Port of Sandwich in Kent, and serves as the Colchester out-port, where the larger kind of vessels receive and discharge their cargoes. It carries on ship and yacht building, and the building of boats for the oyster dredging and fishing; occupies a gentle declivity with a good view of the river; and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Colchester. There is a good quay, and a fair is held on 4 Sept. Acreage of parish, 1549 , population, 2309. Wivenhoe Park, a good modern mansion, stands in a deer park of about 180 acres. Wivenhoe Hall is a chief residence. The manor belongs to the Corsellis-Lawton family. The living is a rectory in the diocese of St Albans; net value, £250 with residence. The church, which was restored in 1860, is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel with S aisle, nave of four bays, aisles, N and S porches, and an embattled western tower. It has some good ancient brasses, tombs, and monuments. The church was damaged by an earthquake in 1884. There is a Congregational chapel.
