Tollesbury, a large fishing village and a parish in Essex. The village stands on a creek of the Blackwater, 9 miles E by N of Maldon station on the G.E.R., carries on extensive oyster-dredging, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Witham, and formerly had a fair on the last Thursday and Friday of June. The parish includes part of Tiptree Heath chapelry, and comprises 4866 acres of land and 163 of water; population of the civil parish, 1617; of the ecclesiastical, 1707. Much of the land is saline pasture. There is a coastguard station. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of St Albans; gross value, £539 with residence. The church is a large building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chance!, nave, S porch, and an embattled western tower. There is a Congregational chapel.
