Herrington, West, a township in Houghton-le-Spring parish, Durham, on the river Wear, 1 1/2 mile W of Middle Herrington. Post town, Fence Houses; money order and telegraph office, Shiney Row. Acreage, 980; population,. 3426. The Earl of Durham is lord of the manor. The townships of East and West Herrington were formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1884. Population, 3635. The living of St Aidan with St Cuthbert is a vicarage in the diocese of Durham; gross value, £300. Patron, the Bishop of Durham. The church of St Aidan is a building in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, &c. St Cuthbert's is a small church, erected in 1840.
