Description
Monkton, a village forming part of Hedworth, Monkton, and Jarrow township, Jarrow parish, Durham, 1 mile SW of Jarrow station on the N.E.R. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Jarrow-on-Tyne. It disputes with Bede's Hill and with Sunderland the claim of being the birthplace of the Venerable Bede, and has a spring, called Bede's Well, which was long a superstitious resort for the benefit of diseased or infirm children. There are a chapel of ease, erected in 1881 as a memorial to the Venerable Bede, and a United Methodist chapel. See HEDWORTH.
