Hendon, a ward in the county borough of Sunderland, and three ecclesiastical parishes formed from Bishop Wearmouth parish, Durham, on the coast, in the southern outskirts of Sunderland, and a quarter of a mile from Sunderland station on the N.E.R., with a post, money order, and telegraph office (T.S.O.) under Sunderland. Population of the ecclesiastical parish of St Paul's, constituted in 1854, 11, 555; of St Igna-tius, formed in 1889, 8606; of St Barnabas, Middle Hendon, formed in 1876, 9418; of the ward, 7017. The living of St Paul's is a rectory in the diocese of Durham; net value, £267 with residence. The living of St Bamabas is a vicarage; gross value, £300, in the gift of the Rector of Hendon.
