Helmington Row, a township in Brancepeth parish, Durham, on the river Wear, and 1 mile from Willington station on the N.E.R. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Crook (E.S.O.) Acreage, 1302; population, 3981 Coal-mining is largely carried on, and has been much extended. Helmshore or Musbury, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish in Lancashire, 6 1/4 miles N by W of Bury, with a station on the L. & Y.R., and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Manchester. There are several cotton and fulling mills. Acreage, 1714; population of the township, 1114; of the ecclesiastical parish, which includes the hamlet of Flaxmoss, 2070. Helmshore House, Flaxmoss House, Westbourne, and Tor Side are chief residences. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester; gross value, £189 with residence. Patron, alternately the Crown and the Bishop. The church was built in 1852, stands on an eminence near Helmshore village, and consists of nave, N aisle, and chancel, with tower and spire. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. A Liberal club was built in 1889, and a Conservative one in 1892. The Duke of Buccleuch is lord of the manor.
