Description
Hamsterley, a village, a township, and a parish in Durham. The village stands on a hill, near the river Bedburn, 2 miles SW of Witton-le-Wear station on the N.E.R., and 6 W by N of Bishop Auckland, and has a post office under Bishop Auckland; money order office, Toft Hill; telegraph office, Witton-le-Wear. Acreage of the township, 2983; population, 442; of the ecclesiastical parish, 694. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Durham; net value, £291 with residence. Patron, the Bishop. The church i£ ancient and cruciform, with a belfry, and was restored in 1885. There are Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels.
