Chilton, Durham

Description
Chilton, a township in Merrington parish, and part of the ecclesiastical district of Ferry Hill, Durham, adjacent to the Weardale railway, 6 1/2 miles E of Bishop-Auckland. Post town, money order, and telegraph office, Ferry Hill. Acreage, 2422 ; population, 1536. Chilton Hall is the residence of the Fenwick family. An iron church, opened in 1878, is a chapel of ease; there are also Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels.
