Description
Uffculme, a village and a parish in Devonshire. The village stands on the river Culm, with a station on the G.W.R., 177 miles from London, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Cullompton. It was anciently called Upculm, has been a market-town since 1266, and carries on malting, brewing, and woollen manufacture. The parish contains also eight hamlets, and comprises 6158 acres; population, 1806. Bradfield House has belonged since the time of King John to the family of Walrond. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Exeter; net value, £205 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Exeter. The church has been restored and enlarged, and the tower and spire rebuilt. There are two church chapels, one being at Bradfield, and a Congregational and two Baptist chapels, and an endowed grammar school.
