Description
Loddiswell, a village and a parish in Devonshire. The village stands on the river Avon, 3 miles NNW of Kings-bridge, and 1 mile from Loddiswell station on the Kingsbridge branch of the G.W.R., and has a post and money order office under Kingsbridge; telegraph office, Kingsbridge. Acreage, 3598 ; population of the civil parish, 805 ; of the ecclesiastical, 845. The manor belonged formerly to the Arundels, and afterwards to the families of Kerswell and Wise. Traces of an ancient camp are on Blackdown Hill. The living is a vicarage, united with the perpetual curacy of Buckland-Tout-Saints, in the diocese of Exeter, value, £250 with residence. The church is ancient and good; consists of nave and chancel, with a tower; and contains several monuments. A handsome pulpit was erected in the parish church in 1893 in memory of Mr Eichard Peek, who was born at Hazlewood. There are Congregational chapels at Loddiswell and Hazlewood.
