Description
Combe-Raleigh, a parish in Devonshire, in the Otter valley, 1 1/4 mile NNW of Honiton station on the L. & S.W.R. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Honiton. Acreage, 1623 ; population, 243. The manor belonged formerly to the family of Baunton, and belongs now to the family of Bernard. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Exeter; value, £232 with residence. The church is of the 15th century, consists of nave, chancel, and north aisle, with western embattled tower, and has a handsome eastern memorial window. It was restored and reseated in 1886-87. The churchyard contains the tomb of John Sheldon, professor of anatomy in the Royal Academy. There is also a tablet in memory of him in the church. The parish has borne the names of Comb Mathew and Comb Baunton from Sir Mathew de Baunton, of the time of Henry III., and Combe Raleigh from its possessor, Sir John Raleigh, of the reign of Edward II.
