Whitby, Cheshire

Description
Whitby, a village and a township in Eastham and Stoke parishes, Cheshire. The village stands on the Ellesmere Canal, 1 mile S of Ellesmere Port station on the Birkenhead railway, and 6 1/2 miles N of Chester. It has a post office under Chester; money order and telegraph office, Ellesmere Port. The township comprises 1214 acres of land and 18 of water, with 36 of adjacent tidal water and 154 of foreshore; population in 1891 was 5107, including 1024 persons engaged in the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal. The township includes the village of Ellesmere Port or Whitby Locks, and is partly included in Ellesmere Port ecclesiastical parish. Whitby Hall is the chief residence. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel.
