Wheelock, Cheshire

Description
Wheelock, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish, in Sandbach parish, Cheshire. The village stands on the river Wheelock and on the Trent and Mersey Canal, 1 mile SSE of Sandbach, and 4 miles NE of Crewe, with a post and money order office under Sandbach; telegraph office, Sandbach. The township comprises 690 acres; population, 826. There are extensive alkali works, employing many hands, and a silk factory. Salt works are at Wheelock and Malkins Bank. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1843, and comprises the townships of Wheelock, Hassall, and part of Betchton. Population, 2244. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chester; net value, £200 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Sandbach. The church was erected in 1838. A chapel of ease was erected in 1883 at Hassall Green. There are Baptist, Congregational, Primitive Methodist, and Wesleyan chapels.
