Werneth, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Stockport parish, Cheshire. The township stands on the Peak Forest Canal, partly within the borough of Hyde, 4 miles ENE of Stockport. It contains the village of Compstall, with a post, money order, and telegraph office under Stockport, the village of Gee Cross, with a post, money order, and telegraph office under Hyde, and the village of Apethorne. Acreage, 1571; population, 2587. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. Green Hill and Ape-thorne House are chief residences. Cotton manufacture, calico printing, and hat making are largely carried on. Werneth Low is an eminence commanding very fine views. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1842. Population, 1041. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chester; gross value, £150. The church is in Compstall, and was built in 1841. There are Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels and an Athenaeum at Compstall. Gee Cross forms a separate ecclesiastical parish.
