Rostherne, Cheshire

Description
Rostherne, a village, a township, and a parish in Cheshire. The village stands 3 1/4 miles N of Knutsford, and has a post and telegraph office under Knutsford; money order office, High Legh. The township comprises 1402 acres of land and 122 of water; population, 407. There is a parish council consisting of eight members. The parish contains also tha townships of Tatton, Mere, Millington, and High Legh. Population, 1788. The manor belongs to Lord Egerton of Tatton. The manor house is a modern mansion. Rostherne Mere is a lake of 118 acres in extent and of great depth. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chester; gross value, £300 with residence. Patron, Lord Egerton of Tatton. The church is a picturesque edifice dating from the 13th century, and has several side chapels or chantries containing monuments of the Egerton, Legh. and other families. It was restored in 1888. There are Congregational and Wesleyan chapels.
