Description
Greasley, a township and a parish in Notts, lying 2 1/4 miles E of Langley Mill railway station, and 7 NW by N of Nottingham. Post town, Nottingham; money order office, Newthorpe; telegraph office, Eastwood. The parish includes the hamlets of Moor Green, formerly Greasley Moor Green, Brinsley, Rimberley, Newthorpe, Watnall Cantelope, and Watnall Chaworth. Acreage, 7220; population, 11, 143. The population of the ecclesiastical parish of St Mary is 3441. Brinsley and Rimberley have been formed into separate ecclesiastical parishes, with populations of 1423 and 6457. The manor belonged anciently to the Cantilupes, and belongs now to the Cowper family. Some remains exist of Greasley Castle, or ancient manor house, and of Beau Vale Abbey. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Southwell; net value, £235 with residence. Patron, Earl Cowper. The church is a good stone edifice with a handsome tower. The district parishes of Brinsley and Rimberly are separate benefices. There are Congregational, Baptist, Wesleyan, Primitive, New Connexion, and Free Methodist chapels.
