Description
Eastham, a township and a parish in Cheshire. The township lies on the river Mersey, 1 mile S of Eastham Ferry, 1 1/2 S of Bromborough station, 1 1/2 N of Hooton station on the Birkenhead railway, and 6 miles SSE of Birkenhead, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Birkenhead. Acreage, 1604; population, 1729. During the summer boats run every hour from Liverpool to Eastham Ferry across the Mersey, which is 3 miles broad here. The Manchester Ship Canal commences at Eastham. The section to Ellesmere Pool was opened for traffic in July, 1891. There are three large locks at the mouth of the canal, the largest being 600 feet by 80, the intermediate 350 feet by 50, and the small lock 150 feet by 30. The parish used to contain also the townships of Great Sutton, Little Sutton, Over Pool, Nether Pool, Childer Thornton, and Hooton, and part of the township of Whitby called Ellesmere Port. Carlett Park is the chief residence. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chester; value, £175 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Chester. The church is Early English with later additions, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, Stanley chapel, south porch, and tower and spire. It contains monuments to the Stanleys of Hooton, the Trevors, and others, and a Saxon font. The vicarages of Great Sutton, Ellesmere Port, and Hooton are separate and daughter benefices.
