Description
Cheadle, a town, a township, and a parish in Cheshire. The town stands near the river Mersey, 3 miles SW of Stockport, and 7 SSE of Manchester. It has stations on the L. & N.W. and Cheshire Lines railways, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Manchester. Population, 6608. The town is joined with Gatley under the government of a local board, and has a literary institute containing a large public hall, library, &c. There is a convalescent hospital in connection with the Manchester infirmary. The parish includes also the townships of Cheadle-Bulkeley and Cheadle-Moseley, and Handforth-cum-Bosden. Acreage, 6307; population, 20,166. The greater part of the parish is within the county borough of Stockport. Many of the inhabitants are employed in cotton and silk mills. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chester; gross value, £500 with residence. Population of the ecclesiastical parish, 5150. The church is Perpendicular English, and contains an altar tomb of the 15th century and other monuments. The vicarages of Cheadle-Hulme and Handforth-cum-Bosden are separate benefices. There are Congregational, Weslevan, Primitive, and New Connexion Methodist chapels. There is a chapel of ease at Cheadle-Heath.
