Description
Longcott, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Shrivenham civil parish, Berks. The township lies on the White Horse Vale, and on the Wilts and Berks Canal, 3 miles NE by E of Shrivenham station on the G.W.R., and has a post office under Faringdon; money order and telegraph office, Shrivenham. The manor and most of the land belong to Viscount Barrington. The ecclesiastical parish includes also the township of Fernham, which is noticed separately. Area of township, 1894 acres; population, 310; of the ecclesiastical parish, with Fernham, 456. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Oxford; gross value, £210. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, includes a modern aisle, and has an embattled tower of 1722. There is also a Wesleyan chapel.
