Description
Newcastle, two hamlets and a parish in Glamorgan. The hamlets are Higher Newcastle and Lower Newcastle; they lie on the river Ogmore, within and to the NW of the town of Bridgend; and they take their name from an ancient castle, the outer walls and a Norman doorway of which still exist. Higher Newcastle includes the villages of Aberkenfig and Penyfai. The parish consists of the two hamlets. Acreage, 2169 and 870 respectively; population, 3765 and 1236. Post town, Bridgend. For parish council purposes, Lower Newcastle is in the urban district of Bridgend, while Higher Newcastle has a parish council of fifteen members. The living is a vicarage, united with the perpetual curacies of Laleston, Tythegston, and Tondu, in the diocese of Llandaff; net value, £170 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Llandaff. The church stands on a conspicuous site in Bridgend. The nave was doubled and rebuilt in 1849, and the chancel was rebuilt and a N chancel aisle added in 1894, when the church was restored.
