Coychurch, Glamorgan

Description
Coychurch, two townships and a parish in Glamorgan. The townships are Higher and Lower Coychurch, and lie on the eastern branch of the river Ogmore, 2^ and 1 1/2 miles E by N of Bridgend. Acreage, 3928 and 1099 ; population, 325 and 309 respectively. The parish includes also Pencoed hamlet and Peterstone chapelry, and it has a post office, of the name of Coychurch, under Bridgend; money order and telegraph office, Bridgend. Population, 1801. The living is a rectory, united with the perpetual curacy of Peterstone-super-Montem, in the diocese of Llandaff; gross value, £194 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Dunraven. The church is a fine cruciform edifice of the 14th century, similar to the church of Coyty, but larger, and was restored, in 1873 and 1888. The central tower fell in 1874, doing great injury to the chancel and transepts. It retains sedilia, piscina, and aumbrey, and two curious 14th century effigies. There are Congregational and Calvinistic Methodist chapels.
