Description
Stratton St Margaret, a village and a parish in Wiltshire. The village stands near Stratton station on the G.W.R., and 2 1/2 miles NE of Swindon, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Swindon. The parish includes Upper Stratton tithing, contains Highworth and Swindon Union workhouse, and comprises 2860 acres; population, 8232. There is a parish council of fifteen members. An alien priory cell was founded in 1066, and was given by Henry VI. to King's College, Cambridge. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol; net value, £150 with residence. Patron, Merton College, Oxford, on the nomination of the Bishop of the diocese. The church is good. There are Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels, and an iron mission church.
