Compton-Chamberlain, a parish in Wilts, on an affluent of the river Avon, 1 1/2 mile SE of Dinton station on the L. & S.W.R., and 4 1/4 miles W by S of Wilton. It has a post office under Salisbury; money order and telegraph office, Dinton. Acreage, 1878 ; population, 272. Compton Chamberlain Park is the seat of the Penruddock family, and belonged to Colonel Penruddocke, who was executed for an attempt to overthrow Cromwell. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Salisbury; net value, £93 with residence. The church contains an obituary of the Penruddocks, and a large brass of a priest, and is good.
