Description
Fillongley. a village and a parish in Warwickshire, near Arley and Fillongley station on the M.R., 6 miles NW by N of Coventry. There is a post and money order office under Coventry; telegraph office, Arley (R.S.) Acreage, 4761; population, 1066. Old Fillongley belonged to the monks of Coventry, and the rest of the land was given to Robert Dis-pensator, and passed to the Hastings family. " Here," says Dugdale,t( were two castles, the one north-east of the church, about one-fourth of a mile, to this day called by the name of Castle Hill, the other southward from the church, scarce half the distance, bearing still the name of Castle Yard, and unto which a park of very large extent was attached." Fillongley Hall, Fillongley Grange, and the Lodge are- the chief residences. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Worcester; net value, £200 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is of the Decorated period, and has been restored; a portion of an ancient cross stands in the churchyard. The Birmingham Municipal Industrial Schools are in this parish.
