Description
Compton-Verney, a parish in Warwickshire, on the Fosse Way, 2 miles WNW of Kineton. Post town, Warwick; money order and telegraph office, Kineton. Acreage, 1668 ; population, 86. The manor came into the possession of Sir Richard Verney, ancestor of Lord Willoughby de Broke, who is at present lord of the manor, in the time of Henry V. Compton House is an edifice of last century, by Adam, and stands amid extensive ornate grounds. The living is a vicarage, consolidated with that of Combroke, in the diocese of Worcester; joint gross value, £200. Patron, Lord Willougby de Broke. The churchstands near the mansion, to which it was formerly attached ; it was consecrated in 1852, and constituted a parish church, and contains some ancient stained windows and monuments to the Verney family, removed at the end of the last century from a former chapel.
