Ashfield, Great, a parish in Suffolk, 2 1/2 miles N of Elmswell station on the G.E.R., and 7 1/2 NW of Stowmarket. It has a post-office of the name of Ashfield, under Bury St Edmunds; money order and telegraph office, Elmswell. Acreage, 1548; population, 362. Ashfield Lodge and Ashfield House are chief residences. Ashfield was the birthplace of Lord Chancellor Thurlow, and of his brother, the Bishop of Durham. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ely; gross yearly value, £60. Patron, Lord Thurlow. The church is a small brick and flint edifice, with a tower. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
