Kinnerley, Shropshire

Description
Kinnerley, a village and a parish in Salop. The village lies 6 1/2 miles SE by S of Oswestry, and has a post office under Oswestry; money order and telegraph office, Knockin. The parish contains also the townships of Dovaston, Edgerley, Kynaston, Lower Maesbrook, Upper Maesbrook, Osbaston, and Tyricoed. Acreage, 6105; population, 1136. By the Parish Councils Act the parish was divided into four wards, Argoed, Dovaston, Maesbrook, and Edgerley. A castle stood anciently here, and was destroyed in the time of Henry III. by Llewelyn. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of St Asaph; tithe commuted at £170, with Ecclesiastical Commissioners' grant of £50 and residence. Patron, the Earl of Bradford. The church was restored in 1887; the nave and chancel are of 18th century date. The Church of St John at Maesbrook was built by the late Misses Croxon to the memory of their brother, Richard John Croxon. There are Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels at Upper Maesbrook, Knockin Heath, and at Edgerley, and a Congregational chapel at Dovaston.
