Description
Hughley, a village, a township, and a parish in Salop, on Wenlock Edge, 1 mile W of Presthope station on the G.W.R., and 4 miles SW by W of Much Wenlock. Post town, Cressage under Shrewsbury; money order and telegraph office. Much Wenlock. Acreage, 1105; population, 72. The manor belonged in the 12th century to Hugh de Le, hence the name Hnghley, and belongs now to the Earl of Bradford. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Hereford; net value, £109 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Bradford. The church is ancient, has a bell-turret, and contains a beautiful rood-screen, a carved oak pulpit, and some fragments of old stained glass. The surrounding country is very picturesque.
