Newington, Oxfordshire

Description
Newington, a village and a parish in Oxfordshire. The village stands on the river Thame, 4 1/2 miles N of Wallingford, and 5 1/2 E of Culham railway station. The parish contains also the liberty of Berrick Prior, the tithings of Brook-Lampton and Great Holcombe, and the chapelry of Britwell Prior, which is noticed separately. Post town, Wallingford; money order and telegraph office, Stadhampton. Area of Newington, 2111 acres; population, 343; of Britwell Prior, 720 acres; population, 61. There is a parish council consisting of five members. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Oxford; gross value, £390 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Oxford. The church is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, N transept, S porch, and a western tower with spire, rising from an Early English base. It contains, in the S wall, a handsome decorated tomb-recess, and in the church some ancient tombs and monuments.
