Description
Easton, a village and a parish in Hants. The village stands on the river Itchen, 1 1/4 mile from Itchen Abbas station on the L. & S.W.R., and 2 1/2 miles NE by N of Winchester. It has a post office under Winchester; money order and telegraph office, Kingsworthy, 1 1/4 mile distant. The parish comprises 2781 acres; population, 439. The living is a, rectory in the diocese of Winchester; net value, £362 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is Late Norman, has a rich south doorway and an apsidal vaulted chance], which contains a mural tablet to the memory of Agatha, widow of Bishop Barlow (1595), recording that her five daughters were all married to bishops. The whole church was restored at a cost of upwards of £2000 in 1872, and has three ancient bells (D. C. and B t£). There is a Primitive Methodist chapel.
