Description

Jacobstow, a parish in Cornwall, 5 miles SE of Widemouth Bay, 6 from Tresmeer station on the North Cornwall railway, and 8 1/4 S by W of Stratton. It has a post office under Holsworthy; money order and telegraph office, Stratton. Acreage, 4471; population of the civil parish, 375; of the ecclesiastical, 383. Two barrows are at Headon. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Truro; gross value, £250 with residence. Patron, the Earl of St Germams. The church is ancient, has a granite tower, and was thoroughly restored. in 1886. There is a Bible Christian, chapel. Digory or Degory Weare, an historical writer, and first Camden Professor of History at Oxford, was born here in 1573. Fairs are held at Wainhouse Comer on 24 June, 24 July for lambs, 29 Sept., 5 Nov., and Lady Day, and at Canworthy Water first Wednesday in June and 18 Sept.
